A first trip to Twickenham is always an adventure, as a party of Cumbrian youngsters who were guests at the England v Argentina thanks to the hospitality of the RFU, the Cumbria RFU and Richmond RFUC will happily testify. A party of children and adult chaperones from Morland, Lowther and North Lakes schools enjoyed the trip, which involved both watching the international and playing on Saturday morning in a tournament at Richmond’s Athletic Ground headquarters. Lunch at the club, a visit to the Twcikenham museum, top seats at the game and a photocall with RFU President John Owen, who had his grandsons on mascot duty on what was a great day for the family from Shap, combined to produce a terrific outing for the Cumbria contingent. Roger Hackney RFU Council member for Cumbria, who coaches the youngsters, was clearly proud of his protégés. Said Morland’s John Jenkinson: “We really enjoyed the tournament, which was won by Richmond. We had eight girls in our teams and I don’t think they were expected to play so well. Richmond gave us a superb lunch and presented each school with a plaque”. “This was a wonderful opportunity for our children to take part in a national event and we’d like to thank everyone involved,” said Morland Headteacher Louise Anderton: “I’d also like to congratulate the children, who received compliments about their behaviour from all quarters.”
